Strawberries

So, this year we thought we would try and grow some vegetables and even attempt strawberries. I think we were motivated after the success of re-designing the garden in Bisenti. The boys asked to get involved, then we had the offer of some free onions and garlic from a friend so we thought why not?

We had already added some viola plants to the terrace in Arsita, and so we went shopping for more pots and compost. I hadn’t imagined what it might be like trying to ask a 4 and 2 year old to help with compost…..It started well until they discovered the trowels and how much fun it was to dig up the soil in the pot and some of it ended up on the floor.

Then after a couple of pots were filled and the onions were planted, they asked if they had grown yet….same went for the potatoes too. So the interest waned a bit at that point.

Our 4 year old asked where the strawberries had gone….which we actually didn’t have so another trip out to look for strawberry seeds. He actually found strawberry kits hidden at the back of a shop shelf! So five strawberry kits were purchased, with much excitement the seeds were planted. They are currently living on our washing machine in the bathroom. It seems we have to start them off inside. Not easy when most of our house does not have any large windowsills, and the windows open inwards…let’s see how we get on!
